Semiahmoo is a unique bayside community that offers easy access to the San Juan and Canadian Gulf Islands as well as exceptional scenic beauty along Drayton Harbor and Semiahmoo Bay. The community is located near the town of Blaine in the northwesternmost part of Washington State, approximately 115 miles N of Seattle, 40 miles SE of Vancouver, BC and 26 miles NW of Bellingham. Prior to the arrival of early prospectors and settlers headed into the Fraser River Valley, the Semiahmoo First Nation and Lummi Native tribe historically used the spit due to its geographical location. With Drayton Harbors calm waters providing potential resources and access farther into the Strait of Georgia. During the mid-1800s, Semiahmoo was a logical jumping-off point for expeditions headed farther into the mainland, a small fishing town developed with a trading post and Whatcom County’s first salmon cannery opened in 1881. The Alaska Packers Association was the largest salmon cannery in the world by the late 1800s and Salmon canning was the main source of revenue for residents of the area for the next 100 years. In 1980, the land was purchased by a residential development firm and construction began. Today, Semiahmoo is a master homeowner association boasting one of the nicest gated communities in Whatcom County, within Semiahmoo you may also find a variety of smaller homeowner associations for specific neighborhoods. Semiahmoo Spit is home to waterfront homes and condos with westerly views over the Georgia Strait and Canadian Gulf Islands and easterly views of snow-covered Mt. Baker and Drayton Harbor. There are two 18-hole golf courses nearby and the Arnold Palmer-designed Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club is ranked as one of the best public courses in Washington state. The Semiahmoo Marina is a full-service 300-slip private saltwater marina located at the end of the spit, next to the Semiahmoo Resort Hotel and Restaurant. There is also a public park with beachside walking and biking trails. The main thoroughfare is Semiahmoo Parkway which provides access to the end of the peninsula. The Coast Millennium Trail is an easy and paved 0.8-mile trail that runs the length of the spit. The historic passenger ferry The Plover, once responsible for shuttling cannery workers across the harbor still runs in the summer as a tourist attraction from the Blaine Fishing Pier. Semiahmoo is located within the Blaine School district, students will attend Blaine Elementary, Middle, and High Schools on a large, consolidated campus in central Blaine.
